Boys’ Hockey

Hockey is the main sport for boys during the autumn and spring term. It is played during Games, after school and on Saturday mornings by all First and Second year boys. In a normal season there are more than 400 boys’ hockey fixtures played by all KGS teams from U12 to 1st XI. KGS boys’ sides compete in the Tier One National Schools Championships at U18, U16, U14 and U13, the Independent Schools Cup at U19, U15, and U13 and the National Indoor Championships at U18 and U16.

KGS has an impressive record in school hockey, regularly producing junior international players at U16 and U18 level, as well as competing for and winning national titles at all age groups indoors and outdoors. In 2022, the 1st XI finished 2nd in the Tier 1 National Competition and 3rd in the Independent Schools Hockey Cup. The U13s also qualified for the in 2 Hockey National Finals, finishing 2nd in the country. At the Tokyo Olympics Old Kingstonians Jack Waller and Zach Wallace both played for Great Britain and both represented England at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games winning a bronze medal.

KGS has a strong coaching team made up of current and former International and Premier League players. KGS is proud to have strong links with a number of prominent clubs in the area, including Surbiton HC, Wimbledon HC and Old Cranleighans in particular. Boys’ Hockey sides regularly tour within the UK and to Holland and Europe, as well as to South Africa every other summer. The next tour to South Africa will be summer 2023.

Girls' Hockey

Girls' Hockey takes place during games and after school in both the autumn and spring terms. There are matches both midweek and on Saturday mornings for the various different age groups and teams within these. The Girls' 1st XI, U16A , U14A and U13A age groups all enter the Tier 1 England Hockey National Competition with the Independent Schools Cup providing a knock-out style competition for the U13s, U15s and U19s. The girls' U16 and U18 teams also have the opportunity to compete in the Indoor Competitions which run just before Christmas and into early January.

In 2020 KGS re-wrote the history books, winning the U13 and U15 Independent Schools Competitions and the U14s winning the England Hockey National Competition. In 2022, U16 Indoor qualified for the National Championships and in the same season the 1st XI made it to the last 8 in the National Outdoor Competiton and the U19s and U15s both came runners up in the Independent Schools Competition. Old Kingstonian Holly Munro represented Wales in the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games and Millie Giglio captained England U21s to a Bronze medal in the Junior World Cup in South Africa. Current students Martha, Kea  and Tula all have junior international experience, with Tula captaining the U16s, Kea playing for the U18s in the European Championships and Martha being a part of the GB Elite Development Programme.

We are fortunate to have a strong coaching team made up of current and former players (internationally and domestically) and well qualified Hockey coaches. We have strong links with Wimbledon Hockey Club, Surbiton Hockey Club, Teddington Hockey Club and Old Cranleighans, to name but a few. There are regular opportunities for touring, with the U14s visiting Holland in October, pre-season tours for the 1st XI and a senior tour to South Africa which takes place bi-annually.
