Kingston Grammar School Students Maintain Their Top A Level Record

Students at Kingston Grammar School are today celebrating another outstanding set of A Level results. Having broken all previous school records last year, the 2019 cohort have matched the achievements of their predecessors with two-thirds of all grades awarded A* or A. They will now be continuing their academic journey at top universities across the country.

The results of KGS students are even more impressive when set against the national picture at A Level. In 2019, just 8% of all grades were awarded the top A* grade. The 2019 cohort at KGS have far exceeded that with 28% at A*, and with half of all students achieving at least one A* grade.

A number of students gained a full suite of A* grades across all their subjects, including James Gibson, Alice Lehec, Finn Snow, Daniel Sykes, as well as twins Clara and Ellen Lyckeus, who all gained 3 A*s.

Max Cairney-Leeming achieved 4 A*s and takes up a place to read Maths & Computer Science at Oxford. Max is joined at Oxford by Hamza Ahmad (Biology) and Reuben Cooper (Classics) who both achieved 3 A*s, as well as Ellena Eley (Ancient History & Archaeology), School Captain Katie Orrell (Geography), Amelia Peterson (History), Joe Young (Chemistry).

Taking up places at Cambridge University are Yiorgos Karidis (History), School Captain Toby Fairhurst (Geography) and Zoe Samama (Law).

Wonwoo Choi, who persevered through much of the Sixth Form to get his model aircraft to take flight, now has the opportunity to perfect his design in studying Aeronautical Engineering at Imperial.

It should also be noted that all of our students have managed to achieve this high level of academic success alongside extensive commitment to a wide range of co-curricular activities. This is particularly true of Millie Giglio and Sally Sime, who managed to gain a clutch of A* and A grades while fulfilling their demanding England Hockey duties.

Head Master Stephen Lehec said: “The success of this committed and hardworking group of students is testament to their dedication and focus and I am delighted for them all. With the unfailing support of their teachers, they have not only achieved excellent academic results but, for a large number of them, this was achieved alongside an extensive commitment to co-curricular activities.

The students have all benefitted from the unrivalled pastoral care the School offers. At a time when the pressure on young people seems to grow year on year, it is vital that they leave us as fully rounded individuals who will cope with the rigours of life beyond school.

The contribution these students have made to KGS during their time at the School, as well as to their communities through their charitable and voluntary work, is hugely appreciated. We know that Old Kingstonians go on to make a positive difference to the world and we look forward to following their journey. We are very proud of them all.”
