On Friday four KGS students – Katie Monaghan (11), Tomas Caldon, Freddie Pflanz and Hal Purton (13) will jet off for Toronto, Canada, to represent the UK in the World Final of the Kids’ Lit Quiz 2017.
From June 30th – July 7th, they will join national finalists from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and the USA to share their love of books, explore Canada’s great outdoors, meet authors and celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday.
A highlight of the week will be a Gala Dinner in celebration of young readers at the historic Palais Royale on July 4th.
Since winning the National Finals in December last year, the team has received a lot of support from the Kingston Grammar School community, from coaching and quiz practice with their peers, to cake sales to help raise funds towards the required £3,500 for the flights.
Youngest team member Katie commented:
I can’t believe it! I didn’t imagine when I started KGS last year that I would achieve something like this. When we walked into the regional competition back in December, we never dreamt we would go on to represent the UK in Canada.
Head Master Mr Stephen Lehec added:
As a school we are thrilled with the achievements of Katie, Freddie, Tomas and Hal. They have performed exceptionally well throughout the competition, winning against some tough competition from schools around the country. These students embody the ethos of the School, combining academic rigour with team work and intellectual curiosity. We wish they every success in the Final.
